LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. LCD TV use LCD display technology to produce images. These images can be black /colored and are produced by selectively filtering white light. The positive points about the LCD televisions are their occupancy of space and power consumption is very less as compared to the CRT and Plasma televisions. Size ranges from 15 to 55 inches.
The LCD televisions can also be used as computer monitors. What gives the LCD TV its computer display is the built-in tuner. As it endorses a better technology compared to plasma and CRT televisions, multiple manufacturers have shown keen interest in the production of LCD TVs. The leading companies are Samsung, Sony and Toshiba. LCD TV exhibit versatile contrast and brightness levels. The better viewing angles and pixel quality that LCD televisions provide gives it an edge over the plasma televisions .LCD TV’s have a long life span as they are fairly durable, sturdy, and are easier to install because of their light weight. The LCD consists of two polarizing filters with their lines arranged at 90 degrees to each other. On application of high voltage to the liquid crystals in-between twist; it realigns the lines vertically which then causes a block in the light. In other words if there is no voltage applied the light will be able to pass through, but if there is a voltage applied the light will be blocked. Controlling the different amount of light passing through the liquid crystals allows the LCD to create an image.
Several other variations and modifications have been made in order to improve performance of the LCD TV. Examples for this are In-Plane Switching displays (IPS) offer wider viewing angles and better colour reproduction, but the drawback they suffer from is the slow response times. IPS displays are more commonly used in computer monitors. Vertical Alignment (VA, S-PVA and MVA) offer higher contrast ratios and good response times, but suffer from colour shifting when viewed from some specific angles. In general, controlling the polarization of light is the mechanism used in the working of the display. Another problem is that in earlier LCD systems, low voltage was needed to set the shutters to a particular angle which was not sufficient for re aligning. This resulted in slow response times and led to easily visible "ghosting” where fast-moving images, like a mouse cursor on a computer screen. These problems are now resolved making LCD at its best. The size of the LCD TV ranges from 15 inch to 50 inches. You can buy an LCD TV for just Rs.11,000 ranging up to 60,000. If you are a movie buff then enjoy your favourite movies like never before only on LCD TV.
